Buddha Jayanti

Buddha Jayanti – Celebrating the Birth, Enlightenment & Parinirvana of Lord Buddha

Buddha Jayanti is one of the most sacred and meaningful annual celebrations of the United Sherpa Association (USA) Inc. (Sherpa Kyidug America). It honors the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, whose teachings guide the spiritual and cultural foundation of the Sherpa and Himalayan Buddhist community.

For our community in the United States, Buddha Jayanti is more than a religious festival — it is a moment of reflection, unity, and reaffirmation of our Himalayan Buddhist identity.

Buddha Jayanti at Sherpa Kyidug America

Every year, Sherpa Kyidug America observes Buddha Jayanti with deep devotion and community participation. The celebration includes:

• Special Prayers & Puja

• Baby Buddha Snan (Bathing Ceremony)

• Dharma Teachings & Meditation

• Offering of Lamps (Butter Lamps / Light Ceremony)

• Community Gathering & Blessings

• Viewing of the Sacred Buddha Relics (Astu Dhatu)

These rituals create a peaceful and spiritual environment where individuals and families reconnect with Buddhist values of compassion, wisdom, and harmony.

Sacred Buddha Relics (Astu Dhatu)

One of the most profound aspects of Buddha Jayanti at Sherpa Kyidug America is the public viewing of the sacred Buddha relics.

These holy relics were graciously bestowed to our organization through the Nepal Buddhist Federation, originally received from the Dhammakaya Foundation of Thailand.

The relics are preserved at the Kyidug as a spiritual treasure and are displayed for public blessings only on special occasions, especially during Buddha Jayanti.

This makes our celebration uniquely meaningful for Buddhists across the United States.

Cultural & Community Significance

Buddha Jayanti strengthens the cultural identity of the Sherpa and Himalayan community in America. Through this celebration, we:

• Preserve our Sherpa Buddhist heritage

• Promote peace, compassion, and non‑violence

• Bring together families, youth, and elders

• Strengthen our connection to Nepal and the Himalayan homeland

• Share Buddhist values with the broader American community

The event serves as a bridge between generations and cultures, keeping our traditions alive while embracing our life in the United States.

A Celebration of Peace, Unity & Spiritual Reflection

For Sherpa Kyidug America, Buddha Jayanti is the spiritual heart of our annual calendar.

It reminds us of the timeless teachings of the Buddha — to live with kindness, mindfulness, and compassion toward all beings.

We welcome everyone to join us each year in honoring this sacred day and celebrating the light of wisdom that continues to guide our community.
