Sakadawa – United Sherpa Association USA
(The Most Auspicious Month of Merit in Mahayana Buddhism)
About Sakadawa
Sakadawa (also spelled Sagadawa) is one of the holiest and most auspicious observances in Mahayana Buddhism. It is also known as the Festival of Vaishakha, a period deeply revered by Buddhist communities around the world.
This sacred day holds extraordinary significance because three major events in the life of Lord Buddha—
– Birth,
– Enlightenment, and
– Mahaparinirvana (Passing Away)
are all believed to have occurred on the same full‑moon day. For this reason, Buddha Jayanti (Buddha’s Birthday) is also observed on this day.
The Sacred Month of Sakadawa
According to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, the period from the 1st to the 15th day of the 4th month is considered one of the most spiritually powerful times in Buddhism.
This entire month is dedicated to accumulating merit, practicing compassion, and engaging in virtuous activities.
The 15th day, which is the full‑moon day, is the most important and auspicious.
It usually falls in the month of May in the Western calendar.
On this day, Buddhists believe that the effects of positive actions are multiplied many times, making it a powerful moment for prayer, generosity, and spiritual practice.
